Concurrency

The capacity to be part of more than one call at the same time — a property of a phone system, not of any individual call or of how willing anyone is to answer.

Every phone setup has some concurrency limit, even ones that never advertise a number for it. A single analog line has a limit of exactly one; a second incoming call while the first is active hits whatever the line does when already occupied. Publishing a second phone number doesn't multiply either line's own concurrency; it just creates two separate single-call bottlenecks.

A first caller is mid-order on a Friday rush when a second person dials the same number. What that second caller hears depends entirely on how the line happens to be configured — call waiting, no call waiting, a forwarding rule — not on anything about their own call.

The most common mistake is treating “the phone gets answered” and “the phone can handle this many calls at once” as the same claim. A restaurant with one attentive, dedicated person can still only be part of one call at a time if the underlying line supports only one.
